ARLing Shopping Assistant for WooCommerce

Description

Add an AI chatbot to your WooCommerce store that answers shoppers’ questions from your own product catalogue and links the matching products. You switch it on inside WordPress in about a minute: no sign-up form, no API key, no credit card, and 100 conversations a month are free.

Connecting creates an ARLing account for your shop’s domain and contact e-mail. You can sign in to it at arling.sk with a code sent to that e-mail, but you never have to.

Shoppers ask in their own words (“do you have a waterproof jacket under 80 euros?”) and the assistant answers only from your products, with up to three matching products, their price and a link. You can talk to it on the settings page as soon as it is ready, before any shopper sees it.

What happens after you activate it

  1. The setup screen opens. Your contact e-mail is filled in; you read what will be sent, tick the consent box and click Connect.
  2. The assistant reads your public product list (the WooCommerce Store API your shop already serves). For a few hundred products this usually takes under a minute, and the page updates by itself.
  3. When it is ready, the chat opens right on the settings page with example questions built from your own categories and products, and the chat bubble appears on your shop (within a few minutes if you have left the settings page).

If something stops it from reading your products (a firewall, password protection, a coming soon page, a switched off REST API, a shop with no products), the settings page says what it was and how to fix it, and has a Try again button. Shoppers do not see the bubble until it works: it appears only once the assistant is ready.

What it does

  • Adds a chat bubble to your storefront that answers shopping questions from your product catalogue.
  • Shows up to three matching products, with price and a link, next to each answer.
  • Shows your shop’s name (your Site Title) at the top of the chat instead of a generic title, in light and dark mode. It comes from your own WordPress settings.
  • Answers in Slovak, Czech, English and German. On a site in another language it answers each shopper in the language they write in.
  • Reads your products again automatically once a day.
  • Optional gift finder: a Find a gift tile in the chat asks three questions (for whom, what budget, what interests) and suggests up to five gifts from your own catalogue, each with one short reason. Off until you switch it on.
  • Shows a short offer of help (“Need help choosing?”) next to the bubble once per browser tab, about five seconds after a page opens. The plugin has no setting to switch it off.
  • The chat window has a small “Powered by ARLing Shopping Assistant” link to arling.sk.
  • Takes its accent colour from your theme’s theme-color tag when it has a usable one, otherwise a dark red. The colour mode setting switches between light and dark.
  • Does not store conversation content. ARLing keeps daily counts and a few account events for your shop, to apply your plan’s limits, control its own costs and help with setup; the full list is under External services.
  • Nothing loads on your storefront until you connect your store on the settings page and the assistant is ready.

What it does not do

  • It does not add products to the cart, place orders, apply coupons or look up orders. It answers and links to the product page.
  • It is not a live chat with a person.
  • It only knows what your public product list shows: the name, short description (or description), price, first category, photo and whether a product is in stock. It does not know delivery times or stock quantities.
  • It cannot work on a local or staging copy that is not reachable from the internet (for example localhost, *.local, *.test or WordPress Playground), because the service reads your product list over the internet. The setup screen tells you before you connect.

Pricing

  • Free: 100 conversations a month, no card, no time limit.
  • Starter: 19 EUR a month for up to 1,000 conversations.
  • Pro: 39 EUR a month for up to 3,000 conversations.

Daily limits: Free gives AI answers for about 40 questions a day, Starter for up to 400 and Pro for up to 1,200; above that, shoppers get the closest matching products without an AI answer (every number is in the FAQ under “What are the daily limits exactly?”).

A conversation is one shopper’s chat in one browser tab within 24 hours, however many questions it has, within those daily limits. The settings page shows how many you have used, and WordPress warns you at 80 % and 100 % (this needs the status key your site gets when it first creates the assistant; see the FAQ). When the monthly limit is reached, the chat tells new shoppers the assistant is resting and points them to your contact page, until the count starts again on the first day of the month or you move to a larger plan. The free plan never charges anything. Paid plans are paid through Stripe and renew monthly until you cancel them.

External services

This plugin relies on the ARLing Shopping Assistant service to work. Provider: ARLing s. r. o., Bratislava, Slovakia (https://arling.sk). API and widget address: https://arling-asistent.arling.workers.dev (hosted on Cloudflare Workers).

When you click “Connect” on the settings page (only after ticking the consent checkbox), and again only if you click “Try again” after a failed setup, this plugin sends to the ARLing Shopping Assistant API:

  • Your store’s public WooCommerce Store API product list URL (for example https://your-site/wp-json/wc/store/v1/products?per_page=100, or the ?rest_route= form on sites with plain permalinks), which is data your store already serves publicly to any visitor’s browser.
  • Your site’s domain name.
  • The contact e-mail address you enter on that screen.
  • The language of your own WordPress profile as a two-letter code (sk, cs, en or de), so ARLing’s e-mails to you are in that language, and the fact that the account comes from this plugin.

Connecting creates an ARLing account for your shop’s domain and contact e-mail. You can sign in to it at arling.sk with a code sent to that e-mail to see your plan and usage, but you never have to. No customer data and no order data is ever sent by this plugin. Nothing is sent before you connect. Like every request WordPress makes, these requests also carry the WordPress version and your site’s address in the user agent.

E-mails to the address you enter: right now ARLing sends no automatic e-mails, only a sign-in code when you ask for one at arling.sk; the settings page shows everything instead. When automatic e-mails are switched on, ARLing may send the setup instructions once the products are read (or one message explaining why they could not be read), and at most three service messages about this assistant: a confirmation when it first loads on your site, one offer of help if it does not, and a notice at 80 % of the free monthly limit. They go only to an address on your site’s domain or one you have confirmed with a sign-in code. Each e-mail says why it was sent and has a link that stops all further ones. Nothing else, no newsletters.

While connected:

  • The plugin asks the service for your assistant’s status (GET /v1/tenants/{id}/status: whether it is ready, why a setup failed, plan and conversations used this month) when you open the settings page, every two minutes through WP-Cron for at most an hour after you click Connect or Try again (until the assistant is ready or the setup has failed), and otherwise through WP-Cron at most twice a day. That is how it shows the chat bubble once the assistant is ready, hides it when the setup failed or the service no longer knows your shop, and warns you before the free limit runs out. The request carries only your assistant’s id and, if your site has one, the status key the service gave it when you connected. Deactivating the plugin stops these checks.
  • The widget script is loaded from ARLing’s servers (https://arling-asistent.arling.workers.dev/widget.js, or a self-hosted URL if you use the arling_asistent_widget_endpoint filter) on the storefront pages you choose once the assistant is ready, and on the plugin’s own settings page for the “Try it now” preview. Its script tag also carries your Site Title, which the widget only shows at the top of the chat; it does not send it to ARLing. Like any script request, the shopper’s browser also sends the address of the page it is on; the service uses it only to note the first time the widget loads on your shop’s domain.
  • In the shopper’s browser the widget uses no cookies and no localStorage. In sessionStorage, which the browser clears when the tab is closed, it keeps a random id for the tab (created when the page loads) and, after the first answer, a signed conversation token; both are sent only with chat messages. It also notes there that the offer of help was shown.
  • When a shopper (or you, in the preview) uses the chat, the question and the answer go between the shopper’s browser and this same service only to generate a reply; the service does not store that conversation content.

What ARLing records about your shop, and why:

  • Your account: the domain, contact e-mail, product list address, language, plan and the note that it comes from this plugin, to run your assistant and to reach you about it.
  • A copy of your public product list (name, description, price, first category, link, photo and whether it is in stock) and a search index made from it, read again once a day, so that the assistant can answer.
  • For each conversation, for about a day: a marker made from a random id with the number of questions so far, so that one chat counts once; never the questions themselves.
  • Daily counts per shop: conversations, conversations from your own site, answered questions, AI cost (tokens and compute units) and replies without AI. They apply your plan’s monthly and daily limits and let ARLing control its AI costs.
  • Account events with their date: the account was created (with the language and the note that it comes from this plugin), the products were read or why they could not be, the widget first loaded on your domain, the first shopper question, regular use (enough conversations from your own site over 14 days), 80 % and 100 % of the monthly limit, plan changes, and e-mails sent or stopped. They help ARLing with your setup, decide which service e-mail is due, and feed ARLing’s internal notifications to its own team, which carry your shop’s domain and the event.
  • Per shopper network: how many questions, AI answers and new conversations it had with your shop today, kept under a number derived from the network address with a daily secret, never the address itself. This applies the per-network limits (FAQ: “What are the daily limits exactly?”).

Version 1.0 of the Data Processing Agreement (article 4) also mentions a daily count of clicks on products; the service does not record such clicks, and nothing above includes them.

Upgrading: the upgrade buttons on the settings page link to Stripe Checkout (a payment page hosted by Stripe, https://stripe.com), with your assistant’s id attached so your plan updates automatically after a successful payment. The “Manage or cancel your subscription” link opens the Stripe customer portal. No payment details ever pass through this plugin or through ARLing’s own servers.

Use of this service is subject to ARLing’s:

  • Terms of Service: https://arling.sk/podmienky/en/
  • Privacy Policy: https://arling.sk/privacy/en/ and https://arling.sk/gdpr/en/
  • Data Processing Agreement (GDPR Art. 28), English translation: https://arling.sk/asistent/dpa/en/ (the Slovak original, linked from that page, prevails)

You can disconnect at any time from the settings page, which immediately stops the widget from loading on your site. Disconnecting does not delete data already held by ARLing: write to support@arling.sk to have it deleted (article 8 of the Data Processing Agreement says what is deleted). The plugin keeps this site’s status key when you disconnect, so that connecting the same assistant again still shows your plan and usage; deleting the plugin removes it.

Installation

  1. In wp-admin go to Plugins > Add New Plugin, search for “ARLing Shopping Assistant”, click Install Now, then Activate. WooCommerce must already be active, and your shop must be reachable from the internet.
  2. The setup screen (WooCommerce > ARLing Shopping Assistant) opens by itself. Check the contact e-mail, read what will be sent, tick the consent checkbox and click Connect and build my assistant.
  3. Wait until the page says “Your assistant is ready” (usually under a minute; the page refreshes itself).
  4. Ask it a question right there, or click one of the example questions. Then open your shop: the chat bubble is in the bottom corner of every page.
  5. Optional: choose where the bubble appears, its language, colour mode and corner, and whether to show the gift finder, then click Save settings.

FAQ

Do I need an account on another website or an API key?

Yes, an ARLing account, but you do not create it yourself and need no API key. Connecting creates an ARLing account for your shop’s domain and contact e-mail, right on the plugin’s settings page inside WordPress, without a sign-up form. You can sign in to it at arling.sk, but you never have to. There is no password, and no card for the free plan.

How long until the assistant works on my shop?

Usually under a minute for a few hundred products, a few minutes for several thousand. The settings page refreshes itself and tells you when it is ready.

I do not see the chat bubble on my shop. Why?

Check the settings page first: the bubble only appears once the assistant is ready (a few minutes later if you left the settings page while it was being built), and never while the setup has failed. Then check “Show widget on” (all pages, WooCommerce pages only, or nowhere). If you use a caching plugin, clear its cache. An ad blocker in your own browser can also hide it.

Does it work on a local or staging site?

Only if that site is reachable from the internet, because the service has to read your product list. Local addresses (localhost, *.local, *.test, private IP addresses) and WordPress Playground cannot be connected; the setup screen says so before anything is sent. You can try the assistant on the demo shop at https://arling.sk/asistent/ instead.

The settings page says it could not read my products. What now?

It tells you why. The usual reasons are a security plugin or firewall blocking the public WooCommerce Store API (allow the user agent ARLingAsistentBot), password protection on the whole site, a maintenance or coming soon page, or no published products. Fix it and click Try again.

What does it cost, and what happens at the limit?

Free up to 100 conversations a month, no card needed. Above that, 19 EUR a month for up to 1,000 conversations or 39 EUR for up to 3,000, paid through Stripe. You are warned in WordPress at 80 % and 100 %. At the monthly limit, new shoppers are told the assistant is resting until the count starts again on the first day of the month; nothing is charged unless you choose a paid plan. Every plan also has daily limits (Free: AI answers for about 40 questions and 10 new conversations a day); above them shoppers get the closest matching products without an AI answer. All the numbers are in the next answer.

What are the daily limits exactly?

They count per day in UTC, so that one busy day or one automated visitor cannot use up your month or ARLing’s AI capacity. AI capacity is counted in neurons, Cloudflare’s unit of AI compute; one answer uses about 135 to 170.

  • Free: AI answers for about 40 questions a day (each free shop has 6,000 neurons a day, never more than 60 answers) and 10 new conversations a day.
  • Starter: AI answers for up to 400 questions and 100 new conversations a day.
  • Pro: AI answers for up to 1,200 questions and 300 new conversations a day.
  • One shopper’s network: up to 10 AI answers a day with a free shop (30 with Starter or Pro), 5 new conversations and 60 questions a day with one shop, and 30 AI answers a day across all shops that use ARLing.
  • Free shops share one AI pool with ARLing’s public demo and ARLing’s own tests: 13,000 neurons a day, roughly 85 AI answers for all of them together. Once it is used up, free shops get replies without AI for the rest of the day.
  • All shops together are under ARLing’s overall daily AI limit, today 300,000 neurons (roughly 2,000 AI answers). From 80 % of it free shops get replies without AI, and once all of it is used, every shop does.

Above an AI limit the chat still replies, but not with the AI: it shows the line “These products best match your question.” and up to three products from your catalogue that come closest to the question by meaning. They are not checked against details such as a price limit, so they may not fit everything the shopper asked. A new conversation answered this way does not count towards your monthly limit. One shop gets at most 3,000 replies without AI a day (10,000 on Starter, 30,000 on Pro); above that, and above 60 questions from one network, the chat says “Too many messages at once. Please try again shortly.”

Why does the settings page not show my plan and usage?

They are shown only to a site that has the status key of its assistant. The service gives that key to the site that first creates the assistant (with version 0.4.2 or later), and the plugin keeps it when you disconnect and connect the same assistant again. A shop that first connected with an older version, or that deleted the plugin and installed it again, has no key: WordPress then cannot warn it at 80 % and 100 %, and the settings page links to arling.sk, where you see your plan and usage after signing in with a code sent to your contact e-mail. A paid plan keeps working either way.

What counts as a conversation?

One shopper’s chat in one browser tab within 24 hours, however many questions it contains, within the daily limits (see “What are the daily limits exactly?”). A gift finder search in the same tab is the same conversation. Your own test conversations on the settings page count too.

Does this plugin store my customers’ conversations?

No. The ARLing Shopping Assistant service does not keep a record of what was asked or answered. It keeps daily counts per shop (conversations, answered questions, AI cost, replies without AI) for your limits and its own cost control, a marker for about a day so that one chat counts once, and a few account events such as the first time the widget loads on your domain; the full list is under External services.

What data leaves my site, and when?

Nothing leaves your site until you explicitly click “Connect” after ticking the consent checkbox. At that point, your public product list URL, your site domain, the contact e-mail you entered and the language of your WordPress profile are sent to set up your assistant. The setup screen lists all of it before you click. See the “External services” section above for everything that is sent while connected.

Does it slow down my site?

It adds one deferred script (about 120 KB, about 37 KB compressed) loaded from Cloudflare after the page itself. The chat runs in its own Shadow DOM, so it does not change your theme’s styles.

Which languages does the widget support?

Slovak, Czech, English and German are built in. You can set one explicitly, or leave it on “Automatic” to follow your site’s language. On a site in any other language, Automatic shows the chat buttons in English and the assistant answers each shopper in the language they write in.

Does it have a gift finder?

Yes, as an option you switch on. Tick “Gift finder” on the settings page and the chat shows a Find a gift tile when it opens. It asks who the gift is for, what the budget is and what the person likes, then suggests up to five products from your own catalogue, each with one short reason. It is off by default and adds nothing to your storefront until you turn it on.

Does this work without WooCommerce?

No. This plugin reads your store’s public WooCommerce Store API product list, so an active WooCommerce installation is required.

How do I remove the widget or the plugin entirely?

Click “Disconnect” on the settings page to immediately stop the widget from appearing on your site, without uninstalling the plugin. Deleting the plugin from the Plugins screen also removes all of its local settings from your database, including the status key (see uninstall.php); it does not, by itself, delete your data on ARLing’s servers: write to support@arling.sk to have it deleted (article 8 of the Data Processing Agreement).

Changelog

0.4.2

  • The top of the chat now shows your shop’s name (your Site Title) instead of the generic “Shop assistant”, in light and dark mode. A Site Title longer than 40 characters is cut after a whole word, with an ellipsis. It is read from your own WordPress settings and only shown in the shopper’s browser; nothing new is sent to ARLing.
  • The setup screen now lists everything that is sent when you connect. The language of your WordPress profile and the note that the connection comes from this plugin have been sent since 0.4.0, but the screen said “Nothing else is sent” without them. It now also says what the status check and Try again send and that the chat bubble loads from ARLing’s service, and the consent text names the language too.
  • The setup screen and this readme now say that connecting creates an ARLing account, list the daily limits of each plan as the service applies them (on the free plan about 40 AI answers a day) and what shoppers get above them, and list what ARLing records about your shop and why.
  • The chat bubble now appears on your shop only once the assistant is ready. Before, it appeared right after Connect and answered with an error until your products were read, although this readme said shoppers would not see it until it worked. While the assistant is being built, the plugin checks its status every two minutes for at most an hour, and it also hides the bubble when the service no longer knows your shop.
  • Disconnecting keeps this site’s status key, so connecting the same assistant again still shows your plan and usage. Before, a reconnected shop lost them for good.
  • The links to the Terms, the Privacy Policy and the Data Processing Agreement open their English versions. The agreement link pointed to a section of a Slovak page that does not exist.
  • Version 0.4.1 was never offered as an update, so the changes listed under 0.4.1 also arrive with this version.

0.4.1

  • Your plan and usage are no longer shown to anyone who only knows the assistant id (it is visible in the storefront HTML). They are shown to this store with its status key, to the owner signed in at arling.sk, and to ARLing. When you connect, the plugin now keeps that status key and uses it to read your own plan and usage.
  • A store that connected with an earlier version has no status key: the settings page then says the plan is not shown here, instead of showing “Free”. A paid plan keeps working as before.

0.4.0

  • When you connect, the plugin also sends the language of your own WordPress profile (Slovak, Czech, English or German, anything else as English), so any setup e-mail from ARLing is in your language (ARLing does not send these e-mails yet), and marks the account as coming from this plugin, so the e-mail does not ask you to paste any code.
  • The consent text now says what ARLing sends to your e-mail address: the setup instructions and at most three service messages about this assistant, each with a link that stops them. They are sent only to an address on the site’s own domain.
  • Chats in the “Try it now” preview on the settings page are marked as a preview by the widget ARLing serves, so they are not counted as questions from your shoppers in ARLing’s own statistics. They still count towards the monthly limit, as before.

0.3.0

  • Activating the plugin now opens the setup screen, and the Plugins screen has a “Set up” link. Before, nothing pointed to the setup screen.
  • The setup screen says up front what is free, and warns before you connect when the site cannot work: a local or staging address, WordPress Playground, or a shop with no published products.
  • As soon as the assistant is ready, you can try it on the settings page with example questions from your own catalogue, and open your shop from there.
  • If your products cannot be read, the settings page now says why (firewall or security plugin, password protection, coming soon page, REST API switched off, no products) and has a Try again button. The chat bubble stays hidden from shoppers until it works.
  • Works on sites with “Plain” permalinks: the product list address now comes from WordPress itself instead of a fixed /wp-json/ path.
  • New connections show the chat bubble on all pages. It can still be limited to WooCommerce pages.
  • Plan and usage with a progress bar, a notice on the Dashboard at 80 % and 100 % of the monthly conversations, and a link to manage a paid plan. Plans are only offered once the assistant works.
  • On a site in a language other than Slovak, Czech, English or German, “Automatic” language now answers each shopper in their own language instead of English.
  • The settings page shows “Ready” on the next refresh instead of up to 30 seconds late.

0.2.1

  • The Plan section only offers plans that are a step up. A store already on Pro was shown “Upgrade to Starter” and “Upgrade to Pro” at the same time.

0.2.0

  • Added an optional gift finder: a “Find a gift” button in the chat asks for whom, what budget and what interests, then suggests up to five products from your catalogue, each with one short reason. Switched off by default, tick “Gift finder” on the settings page to enable it.
  • The widget position setting (bottom right or bottom left) now actually takes effect. Earlier versions saved it but the widget ignored it.

0.1.2

  • Added screenshots to the plugin directory listing and corrected the screenshot descriptions to match them.

0.1.1

  • Renamed to ARLing Shopping Assistant: the previous name read as a misspelling of “assistant” in English.
  • Chat interface now falls back to English, not Slovak, when the shop’s language is not one of the four supported ones.
  • Fixed the CORS preflight so the chat works on any shop domain, not only on arling.sk.

0.1.0

  • Initial release: connect flow, status polling, language/colour/position/display-scope settings, front-end widget loader.
